Apprentice: Trainee Accountant

What led you to start your apprenticeship at Haines Watts?

I had left sixth form with a D*DD in Extended Diploma in Applied Science, but didn’t really know where to go next. With no clear idea of what to apply for at university, I felt as though there was no point coming out in the same position as I went in - this didn’t sound too appealing. Therefore, I took a year out to work and travel before seeing a job opening for an apprentice accountant in March 2022 at Haines Watts Launceston.

As the majority of my Diploma, studies had been self / practical work- I felt as though the learning structure of an apprentice was more suited to me. We are given a day in the working week for study, where we are able to focus on the technical side of accounting. The tutors offer 1 to 1 sessions if there is a topic you are unsure of or there for general help and guidance.

There has been an array of opportunities and variety of roles available. This is what sold me, the value of Haines Watts, sets them apart.

Why did you choose accountancy as a career?

I didn’t really know what to expect from the job, but had the chance to speak to some of the apprentices already here. They described the job as hands on, always learning on the job, felt stretched and challenged, and after joining, I could not agree more. There has been an array of opportunities and variety of roles available. This is what sold me, the value of Haines Watts, sets them apart. The atmosphere within the office felt like we were in it together and all eager to learn, bounce ideas off each other and grow.

What are your future plans?

As a short-term goal, I am aiming to complete my AAT Level 2 course and look forward to progressing to level 3 in the coming months. In the long term, with the help of my studies, I hope to work my way up the ladder as I gain more valuable knowledge and skill. I would like to become a specialist of sort, but as my studies are so broad now, I haven’t settled with one yet.

What would you recommend to others?

My top advice would be to give it a go and ask questions. Any apprenticeship can be overwhelming at times, but you’re not expected to know everything, you’re here to learn. Going down the apprentice route means that you have experienced colleagues around you. Definitely use this to your advantage.

May not be viable in a day, but I would love to go into space.

What one thing could you not go a day without?

Music and podcasts, I think listening to both is such an important part of my day.

What’s the closest thing to real magic?

Science, or maybe that’s what makes things less magic?
