What led you to start your apprenticeship at Haines Watts?

I knew University would lead me into the right direction, however at the same time, I wanted to have some personal experience in the accounting field. I started my placement at Haines Watts knowing they supported students locally, so it made sense to move back home for a year and develop my skills and knowledge in the business and accounting sector. I also support the values and morals Haines Watts believe in. This made me more passionate about working here and has allowed me to fit in well.

Position: Trainee Accountant

Did you find office accountancy to be what you anticipated?

Yes and No – Yes in the sense I knew what kind of work would be, given the fact I am doing an Accounting and Management degree, which directly relates to my job role. Additionally, having conducted work experience previously I had an idea about what would be expected of me as an employee working in a professional environment. However, being my first full time job I was unaware of particular aspects such as the office environment and the social aspect of a work life,

Why did you choose a placement?

I chose to do a placement to gain more knowledge and experience in the accounting industry, to aid my degree and advance my career in the accounting and financial world. I also chose to become a placement student instead of being at university for the whole 3 years because I believe doing a placement will enhance my technical and interpersonal skills to help my studies and give me an insight to what life will be like after university.

What would you recommend to others?

I would highly recommend doing a placement or internship during university, not only is it a valuable experience in terms of enhancing professional and technical skills in the industry you have chosen, it also gives you confidence to collaborate and communicate with seniors and colleagues as well as enhancing interpersonal skills and adding value to the business.
