The Birmingham Hippodrome is one of the city’s most famous venues. From its classic red velvet seats, you can enjoy performances from the UK’s biggest entertainment tours. If you need a laugh, you can grab tickets to comedy shows with the likes of Alan Carr and Jon Richardson. For musical theatre fans, autumn shows include SIX and Hairspray.
The IKON Gallery is known for its constantly changing exhibitions of modern art, with a focus on local talent. The building is a work of art in itself, and it’s free entry for browsing. If you wanted to get creative, there are regular art and craft workshops you can get involved in no matter what your level. If you fancy a walking art tour, Digbeth is packed full of graffiti murals and feature walls. Lower Trinity Street, Heath Mill Lane, and Bordesley Street are all dotted with artwork by local street artists including Annatomix. If you include Gibb Street on your tour, you can also head inside to The Custard Factory and do some shopping for art to hang in your office or home.
For almost 18 months we have been staying at home and filling our time with baking, puzzles, and living room workouts. It’s no surprise that a lot of people are now thrill-seeking on their weekends. Birmingham’s huge buildings lend themselves well to adventurous activities that you won’t find anywhere else in the country. You can head to Resort World to fly along ziplines and float in anti-gravity chambers at the Bear Grylls experience. There are multiple escape rooms for group trips and the trampoline parks welcome kids and adults.
There are plenty of spots for an after-work or weekend dinner with a stunning view. In the Mailbox district, you can head to the top of The Cube and enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of the city at Marco Pierre White. For waterside dinner and drinks, Brindley Place has rows of bars and restaurants with outdoor seating you won’t find anywhere else in the city. As we head into the autumn months it’s the perfect spot to hold on to the summer feeling as the weather cools.
Getting that work/life balance is important, so if you’re working in the city then make sure you do something to relieve the stress. The Club and Spa at The Cube will transport you out of the city with its vitality pool, monsoon showers, sauna, and steam rooms. If you’ve got something major to get off your chest, you have to visit the Rage Room. It’s like it sounds – rooms full of breakable items including flat-screen TVs, photocopiers, and dinner plates where you get given goggles and a hammer and the chance to go wild.

With 35 miles of canals across the city, Birmingham boasts a wider waterway network than Venice. While you might not want to cancel your plane tickets, it’s still worth exploring the canal walking routes and seeing what you can find along the way.
If there’s one thing Birmingham is known for, it’s the hit BBC series Peaky Blinders. Based and filmed in locations across the city, you don’t have to go far to spot some famous landmarks. You can even have a drink in the gang’s favourite boozer, The Garrison Pub. Visit the Black Country Museum to learn about the local history and see all the main filming locations or take the tour around Digbeth, where the infamous family calls home.
