Our goal is simple — to improve the quality of the world around us and, in doing so, improve people’s lives. An approach embedded in the origins of Ryder which remains a touchstone today.”
Two pioneering young entrepreneurial architects who worked with Le Corbusier and Ove Arup first met in the office of Berthold Lubetkin. In 1953, they formed Ryder and Yates in Newcastle upon Tyne.
That Le Corbusier, Lubetkin and, to no less extent Newcastle born Arup, had a powerful influence on the subsequent design philosophy of Gordon Ryder and Peter Yates can still be seen in any evaluation of Ryder’s work today. The development of the practice was relatively gradual, and its success depended not only on the notion of integration but equally on the personalities involved and the capabilities they were able to bring to the design of an increasing range of building types.
Ryder now has a team of over 300 passionate people across five UK offices, Hong Kong, Vancouver and Amsterdam, and collaborates globally with its Alliance partners. Ryder has been recognised with over 200 awards, most recently claiming a Queen’s Enterprise Award for International Trade, ranking world class as the leading construction consultant in Best Companies to Work For tables and being named Building’s Architectural Practice of the Year 2021.
The practice’s recent projects include the unveiling of net zero carbon offices on Tyneside for the operations centre for the world’s largest windfarm at Dogger Bank, Whipps Cross Hospital redevelopment in London, Pacific Residence for University for British Columbia in Vancouver, the completion of the new headquarters for West Kowloon Cultural District Authority in Hong Kong and BIM strategies for Qatar public works department and Hellas Gold by its specialist digital consultancy BIM Academy. These are exciting times for Ryder, perhaps the most exciting in over 30 years. We have recruited over 100 people in 2021, established a new team in Manchester, delivered some fantastic projects across all our locations and achieved the profit share goal for our people. A fantastic collaborative effort that reinforces our ethos - it’s all about the team.”
