Sporting goods online retailer

The situation

Our client was facing significant distant selling obligations that needed to be managed both pre-Brexit and post-Brexit. The issues were identified as part of a due diligence exercise, and the company should have registered for VAT in a number of EU markets.

The challenges

The company needed a solution to continue to sell into Europe post-Brexit, across a number of different channels, such as their own website and through online marketplaces. They also needed help managing imports into the EU and then selling forward, on both a B2B and B2C basis. The client also needed to understand the impact of online marketplace rules, where they sold through third party marketplaces.

Our solution

We secured the repayment of the VAT overpaid to HMRC. The benefit of this approach meant that the company was able to fund the payments to the overseas tax authorities once they were registered for VAT. We continued to work with the client to map their transaction flows in terms of how they sold into Europe and their reporting obligations under the online marketplace (OMP), IOSS and OSS schemes.
